Cataplasia is less about teaching people with disabilities to dance than about discovering what happens when they are treated as artists and collaborators.
Cataplasia follows a modern dance company made up of performers with intellectual and developmental disabilities as they explore movement, creativity and self-expression. Through rehearsals, improvisation and performance, the dancers learn to trust their bodies, develop their individual styles and discover talents that have often gone unrecognized.
As the choreographer gets to know each performer, he also begins to rethink his own ideas about dance, disability and what makes someone an artist. We meet a remarkable group of individuals, each bringing a distinct personality and quality of movement to the stage. As their confidence and artistry grow, so does the way their families, audiences and the wider community see them. Cataplasia is an engaging look at the transformative power of dance and the importance of giving people with disabilities the opportunity to be seen, challenged and celebrated as artists.
